There are two areas in poker where somebody could improve very rapidly with next to no work. These two things are truly the low hanging fruit of both live and online poker. Watch this video as I break down five hands that will help you sharpen your game and move up in poker.
Make These Two Changes to Move Up in Poker Quickly Video:
Summary of Moving Up in Poker Quickly Video:
Intro:
Two areas in poker where improvement can be rapid are pre-flop play and multi-way pots, as players often make mistakes in these areas
Consistently making mistakes in pre-flop play and multi-way pots leads to lost profits in spots that can easily be corrected
Preflop Play
Being too loose and passive pre-flop kills win rates, and adjusting to a more creative and aggressive approach will help win extra pots
Identifying and capitalizing on mistakes made by other players, such as cold calling 3-bets from out of position and playing overly wide opening ranges can lead to increased profit as shown in the KQs and AKo hands
Recognize that when an opponent opens to an abnormally large size, this essentially changes the big blind amount you are playing for
You can convert a $13 open raise in a $1/2 game mentally to being a big blind of $4.33, assuming a 3x open size. This then changes the number of big blinds you own accordingly (a $195 stack becomes more like 40 big blinds, not 100 big blinds)
Multiway Pots
In multi-way pots, players often make mistakes, and it's essential to think beyond your own hand strength and consider how your hand fares against your opponents' ranges
When facing a bet and a call in a multi-way pot, it's crucial to fold a marginal holding if your hand has little chance to improve, as you're likely behind and will have to fold later on many runouts
On a monotone board, a large bet size and a call by a player not closing the action can indicate strength, and with a hand like top pair with a marginal kicker, it's best to usually fold with this much action in front of you
Improving Pre-Flop and Multi-Way Skills
When facing a tight open raiser, it's essential to consider their range and adjust your strategy accordingly, such as flatting the button with a hand as strong as pocket tens
Plan ahead for squeezes from the loose aggressive players that are left to act behind you
Using position to your advantage can help you make better decisions, such as seeing a flop with advantageous position and anticipating your opponent's post-flop mistakes
